The Sibley Memorial Hospital residency is a one-of-a-kind experience. Sibley is a strong community hospital
affiliated with a renowned academic health system. Because of this unique exposure to community and
system-level issues, the resident will have the chance to better understand the opportunities and challenges
presented by changes in healthcare legislation, trends in inpatient and outpatient volume, and increased
emphasis on reporting of safety and quality measures.
Sibley has a mission to empower front-line staff, develop innovative ways to transform healthcare delivery, and
create collaborative, multi-disciplinary workgroups around improving safety and quality. The Sibley resident
will have the opportunity to participate in and lead some of this work.
The program will be structured as a project-based residency, providing the resident with exposure to all areas
of the hospital, as well as exposure to the larger health system. The resident will report to Anu Mullick, Chief
The resident will have the unique opportunity to devote some of his or her time to innovation and process
improvement work, including supporting the Sibley Innovation Hub. This may include facilitating patient-safety
projects, managing projects focused on improving efficiency and quality, and building relationships with external
organizations. The resident will also gain a deep understanding of patient experience reporting, working on
patient experience improvement teams and creating reports of patient experience data.
The resident will receive comprehensive training in Lean, Design Thinking, and CUSP techniques, and he or she
will be involved in the analysis and implementation of other problem solving methodologies. Depending on
interest and availability, the resident will have the opportunity to earn their Lean Sigma green belt and to
attend healthcare conferences.

Patients with more choices available to them, are demanding a more customer-friendly experience, and payers are rewarding providers for keeping their patients satisfied. Research has also shown that more satisfied patients are more engaged in their care and for that reason are more likely to be healthier. Sibley has a Patient Experience Council comprised of various members across the hospital. The council’s main goal is to constantly monitor and improve the patient experience.
