This VISTA will build capacity within the Unified Government Public Health Department for both internal operations and external community health work. This position will support the Health Department’s quality initiatives focused on strengthening the organization, increasing cultural competency and improving customer service for clients. This position will be essential to the Health Department’s Public Health Accreditation Board (PHAB) accreditation efforts and will work across all divisions in the Health Department to support the meeting of accreditation standards (including environmental health, communicable disease control, WIC, Community Health, executive leadership, and others). These initiatives are aimed at improving our community’s health by strengthening the public health system.
This position will also support the work of the Community Health Improvement plan (CHIP), which will engage stakeholders to implement and evaluate our five-year plan. The issues are focused around social determinants of health (housing, violence prevention, jobs/education, health access), and the VISTA will assist in building relationships across new areas and in tracking and evaluation of the implementation.

PAY & BENEFITS
VISTA members receive a modest monthly living allowance to help cover basic necessities (roughly $900/month). VISTA members who successfully complete a term of service are also eligible to receive either a Segal AmeriCorps Education Award of $6,095 to pay for college or to pay off student loans, or an end-of-service cash stipend of $1,800. Additional benefits include a $100 housing stipend, training, limited health care benefits, relocation expenses, student-loan forbearance or deferment and non-competitive eligibility for a federal government position.
