Project summary: Reducing Food Waste in Frogtown
In Frogtown, Saint Paul's most diverse low-income neighborhood, Health Advocates will carry out an innovative media campaign to reduce residential food waste, supported by the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency. Health Advocates is a public health consulting group based in Frogtown since 1997. Our project, “Preventing Food Waste: The Frogtown Story” combines intensive, household-level education with media coverage in Greening Frogtown, the neighborhood newspaper published by Health Advocates.
In early 2019, five diverse Frogtown families will be recruited to participate in “Preventing Waste: The Frogtown Story.” They will agree to be featured in at least one article in Greening Frogtown during 2019. The families will be visited monthly by the project coordinator (advised by local food waste reduction specialists) to receive advice and assistance in reducing their household food waste. Families will also receive weekly follow-up phone calls to report and record food waste quantities during the project year period. The visits and the information provided will be described in lively, graphics-heavy articles, in in each of six bimonthly issues of Greening Frogtown in 2019. The project coordinator will conduct family visits, conduct interviews and write stories. Greening Frogtown’s editor will photograph, edit, design and lay out the articles.
