Founded in 1986, Toxic Free NC is the leading pesticide outreach and advocacy organization
in the state. We envision North Carolina as an integral member of a just, global community

to improve the health and well being of North Carolina’s people and environment by
reducing exposures to toxic chemicals used in agriculture and in our daily lives. Through
policy advocacy, engagement, and programs (“Just and Sustainable Agriculture” and “Toxic
Free Kids”) our focus is to serve communities across the state, especially farmworkers,
children, and vulnerable groups most impacted by pesticide pollution. Come join our small

Toxic Free Kids Program
The goal of the Toxic Free Kids program is to reduce, and ultimately eliminate, children’s
exposure to harmful pesticides and persistent toxicants where they live, learn, and play. In
2006, Toxic Free NC was instrumental in the passage of the NC Schoolchildren’s Health Act,
which mandated safer pest management policies in every school district across the state.
Our goal is to extend similar safeguards to protect an even more vulnerable age group:
children under five. We are the only state-licensed provider of a pest-management training
for childcare educators that offers tools and resources to reduce toxic chemicals used in
The program manager will be responsible for all aspects of the Toxic Free Kids program by
assuring effective implementation of initiatives to meet program goals. They will also
support programmatic initiatives of the Just and Sustainable Agriculture program. In 2019,
they will have the opportunity to participate in the final stages of strategic plan
development that will inform the shape and direction of programmatic initiatives, and will
work collaboratively with the Executive Director to design and refine program activities to
ensure meaningful and measurable impact. While toxic pesticides and other poorly
regulated chemicals threaten the health of children across North Carolina, low-resourced
communities and communities of color are at highest risk because of systemic inequities
based on income, race, and ethnicity. The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of
health disparities and a commitment to addressing those disparities through meaningful
and effective program delivery. The program manager will stay up to date on the best
available science, and will be a strong communicator able to distill complex principles of
chemistry into simple and persuasive written and conversational language for a variety of

• Develop strong working relationships and serve as a liaison with public health
professionals, key partners, and stakeholders in the childcare community.
• Support the sustainability and growth of the Toxic Free Kids Program by researching and
writing grants, and working with other staff to support fundraising efforts.
• Administer grant requirements, including reporting, and ensure deliverables are met
through implementation and/or team support.
• Collaborate with and support members of the Toxic Free NC staff on advocacy,
engagement, and organizational initiatives to increase breadth of impact and advance
mission of the organization.
• Support team communications such as the development of educational materials,
newsletters, and appeal campaigns.
• Participate in team meetings, and offer ideas for continuous improvement of programs,
initiatives and campaigns.
• Training and/or professional experience in environmental health science, public health,
environmental science, toxicology, chemistry, or a related field.
• Essential: must be a strong written and verbal communicator, able to synthesize and
convey highly technical information, including principles of chemistry, to any audience.
• High level of comfort with public speaking and presentation delivery.
• Teaching, training, or facilitation experience, with knowledge of popular education

Salary and Benefits
This is a full-time position (40 hours/week) with paid vacation, holidays, and health benefits.
The salary range, commensurate with education and experience, is $40-45,000 annually. The
job is based at our office in downtown Durham, and requires access to a vehicle for occasional
travel around the Triangle and the state.
