The Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health (MEZCOPH) at the University of Arizona (UA) invites applicants for a faculty position in Indigenous health in the Department of Health Promotion Sciences. Candidates with interests and research portfolios in public health issues that affect Indigenous populations locally, nationally, or globally will be considered. Skill and content expertise in Indigenous health can be in diverse areas. However, we are particularly interested in candidates with research foci that complement those of our Department and College. Those interests include, but are not limited to, the following areas: childhood obesity, diabetes, cancer, cardiovascular disease, respiratory health conditions, environmental health, mental health, substance abuse, violence/trauma, trauma-informed care, strengths-based interventions and resilience, integrative health, technology-based and m-Health interventions, and public health applications of artificial intelligence. The position is open to candidates who have expertise with different research including quantitative and qualitative methods, mixed methods, community-engaged research, youth participatory action research, and Indigenous methodologies. The faculty member for this position will be expected to work collaboratively with other university departments, state, tribal, and local health departments, health agencies, and national and global health organizations. We are especially interested in candidates who have a history of, or are interested in networking with and establishing partnerships with tribes, urban Indian health organizations, and Native organizations in Arizona.
The MEZCOPH and the UA place a very high priority on Indigenous research, outreach, and service in the Southwest, United States, and around the globe. In Arizona, there are 22 federally-recognized tribes and three urban Indian health organizations (Tucson, Phoenix, and Flagstaff). The UA resides on the traditional territory of the Tohono O’odham people and Tucson shares geography with the Pascua Yaqui Tribe. The UA has a University Office for Tribal Relations and an Assistant Vice President who sits on the President’s cabinet. The UA Strategic Plan for Native American Advancement and Tribal Engagement includes efforts to strengthen and develop collaborations among current academic units, programs, and tribes to enhance recruitment and retention of Native faculty and students, expand curricular offerings, and increase the proportion and impact of Native faculty and administrators. The UA has a Native Faculty group comprised of over 30 Indigenous scholars who either have faculty appointments or have the highest degree awarded in their field. The UA has a vibrant American Indian Studies Program and Graduate Interdisciplinary Program, and a strong history of Indigenous health research. The UA has several federal research projects that address Indigenous health, including a Native American Research Center for Health (NARCH), and the Center for Indigenous Environmental Health Research (CIEHR). The UA has multiple Native student groups including Native American Student Affairs and the American Indian and Indigenous Health Alliance student group that was founded by and is housed in MEZCOPH and is comprised of undergraduate and graduate Indigenous and allied students interested in human health from across campus. The UA is the top producer of Native doctoral degrees (2017 NSF Survey of Earned Doctorates). It was tied #1 in 2017.
The MEZCOPH is accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH). It is a rapidly growing and dynamic college and a member of the Association of Schools and Programs of Public Health (ASPPH). We are dedicated to promoting the health of communities in the Southwest and globally with an emphasis on achieving health equity through excellence in education, research, and service. The MEZCOPH has active teaching, research, and service programs and has several important university centers, including the Canyon Ranch Center for Prevention and Health Promotion [https://crcphp.arizona.edu/], the CDC funded Arizona Prevention Research Center [https://azprc.arizona.edu/], the Western Regional Public Health Training Center [https://wrphtc.arizona.edu/], the Center for Rural Health [https://crh.arizona.edu/], the Global Health Institute [https://ghi.arizona.edu/], among many others. The MEZCOPH is also a vital partner in multi-college (Medicine, Pharmacy, Agriculture, Nursing) and trans-disciplinary centers that include the Udall Center and its Native Nations Institute, the Arizona Cancer Center, Arizona Respiratory Center, the UA Center for the Elimination of Border Health Disparities, among others.
The mission of the Department of Health Promotion Sciences is to collaborate with communities in the Southwestern United States in developing innovative responses to health challenges and translating best practices globally. In addition to an undergraduate public health degree program and the MPH, the Department offers two doctoral degree programs, a DrPH in Family and Child Health, and a PhD in Health Behavior and Health Promotion. The Department has a diverse group of faculty members who engage in teaching, service and research in the many different areas of health promotion and disease prevention. Competitive applicants must demonstrate academic credentials appropriate for the rank of assistant/associate/full professor (tenured or tenure eligible), including a record of extramural funding and publications in peer-reviewed journals. In addition to maintaining a funded research program, the successful candidate will be expected to develop and teach graduate and/or undergraduate courses in Indigenous Health and to contribute to the research and service mission of the MEZCOPH.
