The Assistant Director for Community-engaged Research Programs provides leadership for the day-to-day administration and management of community-engaged clinical and translational research in the CTSI. The position supports and promotes community-university collaboration through the development and implementation of collaborative community-university programs to build capacity and ensure effective community-university partnerships in translational research. The assistant director establishes and maintains effective working relationships with individuals within the UMN and across the community in diverse organizations and communities to sustain CTSI community-engaged research initiatives, activities and programs. The position manages a diverse portfolio of operations, projects, and collaborations, including initiatives and collaborations of, and across, the national Clinical Translational Science Award (CTSA) program. The assistant director reports to the CEARCH director; partners with the CEARCH director and faculty to set overall goals and priorities; and collaborates with staff and faculty across CTSI to advance overall organizational direction, performance and progress.
1. Plan, coordinate, implement and oversee day-to-day administration/management of community-engaged research programs and direct the work of CTSI staff with CEARCH program responsibilities.
2. Manage all aspects of grant making processes which total over $500,000 per year including drafting and issuing RFAs, determining eligibility, creating and overseeing submission systems and processes, overseeing review processes, managing award selection and notification, and tracking and evaluating grantee progress and outcomes.
3. Organize training and consultation on community-engaged research to University and community investigators and serve as point of contact for complex problem resolution with grantees, faculty and staff involved in CEARCH programs.
4. Oversee system for tracking and reporting all CEARCH activities.
5. Monitor CEARCH budget and approve expenditures for grant awardees and CEARCH projects
Program Development and Implementation (25%)
1. Identify and coordinate development and implementation of emergent initiatives that will advance the engaged scholarship mission of the CTSI
2. Provide leadership in the development and implementation of high-quality programs and tools for university and community audiences to build and maintain capacity in community-engaged research
3. Provide comprehensive oversight to assembling and convening CEARCH Management Council and associated workgroups to assure diverse community representation, fully functioning groups, and an accurate archive of Council activities and outcomes.
4. Synthesize goals, accomplishments, and challenges of CEARCH to help craft “big picture” key message presentations for funders and external advisors, including quantitative and qualitative data, case studies, and strategic recommendations
5. Contribute to developing dissemination of translational science best practices and models
6. With the Program in Health Disparities Research, co-host annual Power of Partnerships Poster Session and Dinner and explore other collaborations such as co-sponsored Community dialogues and dissemination training tools
Research project support and monitoring (15%)
1. Provide personalized consultation to advise collaborative research grantees and other investigators on the principles, conduct and dissemination of community-engaged research through the use of tools, guidelines, and assessment materials.
2. Access resources from the CTSI and across the University for grantees and other investigators on issues related to research collaborations, cultural considerations and diversity, research methods and analysis, IRB approval, participant recruitment, dissemination, and evaluation.
3. Represent CEARCH at weekly research protocol “Feasibility Review” meetings at the UMN Clinical Research Support Center (CRSC) and follow-up with individual researchers as needed
4. Establish timelines, monitoring, and evaluation for all CEARCH funded research.
5. Help plan and support collaborative efforts and joint programs with CTSI’s hub partners (Hennepin Healthcare, Minneapolis VA Health Care System, Community-University Health Care Center, Children’s Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota, University of Minnesota Duluth)
Communication and outreach (15%)
1. Forge new relationships and create and sustain existing partnerships with internal and external stakeholders, including health care and community organizations, to ensure access to CTSI resources and foster community-engaged research, translation and dissemination of research findings.
2. Identify meaningful ways in which UMN and CTSI can contribute to community organizations and stakeholders in their endeavors to reduce health disparities and promote population health
3. With Communications staff and work group members, create and disseminate program materials and external messaging, and elicit critical feedback from diverse community members across Minnesota on emerging health issues
4. Create individualized, detailed program reports, presentations, and other communications for internal and external audiences for use in newsletters, annual reports, proposals, advisory board presentations, and electronic media.
5. Collaborate across CTSI to maximize program, funding, and operational effectiveness through mechanisms such as annual CTSI Poster Session, CRSC Team meetings, common grant application tools and processes, participant recruitment synergy, and CTSI promotion.
6. Engage community organizations, stakeholders and members in meaningful partnerships with CEARCH as poster judges, grant reviewers, community mentors, Community Engagement Studio experts, and Management Council/Work Group members.
7. Sustain relationships with faculty and staff across the University’s health sciences ecosystem, and across the UMN, to promote collaboration and build capacity in community-engaged research programs.
8. Represent CTSI in strategic planning processes of other centers and organizations to inform their future direction and programming (e.g. UROC, Program in Health Disparities Research, Office for Public Engagement)
9. Prepare and present lectures, classes and informational sessions on community-engaged scholarship and translational research to audiences in educational institutions, community organizations, and public agencies
Evaluation and Tracking (15%)
1. Oversee development and implementation of electronic data and tracking system in Zoho and assure accurate and timely reporting by all members of CEARCH.
2. Work with CEARCH faculty and CTSI’s Monitoring &Evaluation function to design and implement comprehensive process and outcome evaluation of CEARCH programs and collaborative projects to assure efficient and effective use of resources to produce measurable results in health care systems, health policy changes, and community health promotion
3. Recommend and execute program revisions and improvements based on evaluation findings
4. Collaborate with CTSI Monitoring & Evaluation to conduct periodic faculty and community surveys, develop evaluation framework and complete CEARCH evaluation and Common Metrics reporting
Professional leadership (5%)
1. Represent CTSI on national CTSA community engagement groups such as Community Engagement Managers and Community Engagement Studio Coordinators
2. Partner with other CTSA institutions nation-wide on collaborative projects
3. Prepare and deliver presentations at statewide and national conferences
4. Represent the CTSI at committees and workgroups at the Minnesota Department of Health and other institutions
5. Participate in UMN forums for community-engaged scholarship with the Office for Public Engagement, such as UMN-Public Engagement Network, Issue Networks, and Community Campus Coordinators Alliance, Minnesota Campus Compact
