|This position joins the Oregon Health Authority’s statewide VISTA team. In addition to activities at your individual site, each member receives additional orientation, training throughout the year, team retreats and meetings, and the support of the team leaders and project director based at the state public health agency. The position is located along the beautiful Columbia River in The Dalles, Oregon in the North Central Public Health District (NCPHD), which serves citizens of Wasco, Sherman and Gilliam Counties. We conduct activities necessary for the preservation of health, prevention of disease, and protection of the public. Most services are targeted at low income, vulnerable community members who have limited access to preventative and regular health services and health education. NCPHD employees are compassionate, caring professionals dedicated to serving the residents of our counties. NCPHD is located in The Dalles, a small town in rural Oregon. The town is ringed by cherry orchards and wheat fields, with a welcoming multicultural population. Our VISTA members are invited to participate in local events and become part of the community. We offer everything from county fairs and mariachi concerts to wine tastings and yoga retreats. Right in our back yard, the Columbia River Gorge region is a place of incredible natural beauty, with access to a multitude of outdoor activities. Hiking, biking, skiing and kite boarding opportunities are all only moments away. With the innovative public health work happening in Oregon, The Dalles is a wonderful place to explore a future in public health.|
|Member Duties : The VISTA member will support efforts to increase access to local produce in schools by collecting and presenting data on school meals and standards. The VISTA member will create a school nutrition task force and use collected data to develop a strategic plan to improve school meals. The VISTA member will also connect with community members and farmers interested in providing convenient and affordable produce to community members affected by poverty; and develop a strategic plan to bring produce directly to low-income children and families. In addition, the VISTA will support opioid overdose and prevention efforts. They will develop materials for outreach efforts to increase awareness and access to naloxone; engage with local law enforcement and evaluate patterns of substance use leading to incarceration; collect information on local substance use prevention programs; and create a summary including analysis of areas of improvement.|
