|This position joins the Oregon Health Authority’s statewide VISTA team. In addition to activities at your individual site, each member receives additional orientation, training throughout the year, team retreats and meetings, and the support of the team leaders and project director based at the state public health agency. The goals and the vision of the Environmental Health VISTA position are aligned with the overall Multnomah County Health Department vision: Healthy People in Healthy Communities. In Multnomah County, poverty is prevalent among populations which experience healthcare inequities and health disparities such as racial and ethnic minorities, immigrants, and people for whom English is a second or other language. The VISTA will spend time learning about the work of the team, the program, and the Public Health Division of the Multnomah County Health Department. The VISTA will have the opportunity to participate in team activities, including monthly team meetings, monthly team equity learning conversations, annual planning and evaluation sessions, and tri-annual Environmental Health Services All-Staff meetings. In addition, the VISTA will have access to a personal workstation with laptop computer and a wide range of online and in-person County training opportunities to help prepare the VISTA for work after service. This position is located in Portland, which is Oregon’s cultural center, dense with independent movie theaters and art galleries. The exceptional public transit system makes it easy to get around the city without a car, no matter if you’re visiting a food cart pod or a public park. With the innovative public health work happening in Oregon, Portland is a wonderful place to explore a future in public health.|
|Member Duties : The VISTA member will increase knowledge of potentially toxic products, identify safe alternatives, develop communication materials, and coordinate with partner agencies to improve health outcomes for vulnerable refugee groups. Through this, the VISTA will improve Multnomah County Environmental Health Services’ understanding of the products. The VISTA member will engage in primary prevention strategies that will protect refugees from lead exposures, such as developing a communications plan and arranging for analytical testing of toxic products sold at retail locations. Finally, for the second part of the project the VISTA will increase awareness about the impacts of wood smoke among low-income communities through outreach, education and communication, as well as supporting communication efforts to participate in National Air Quality Awareness Week.|
