THE DEPARTMENT: The Department of Health Sciences is one of the largest and the fastest growing departments at Cal State East Bay, with 13 tenure-track faculty and about 1,400 students. The Bachelor of Science degree in Health Sciences is designed to prepare students to enter directly into careers in health or post-graduate professional programs.
The Department of Health Sciences has two areas of concentration: public health and health policy. The undergraduate major in Health Sciences emphasizes problem-based learning, teamwork, and strong critical thinking skills, rooted in a population perspective. In addition, faculty actively pursue research and scholarship in the fields of health sciences, as well as engage in university and community service.
The Department is highly diverse, collegial, and goal-oriented, and emphasizes shared decision-making among faculty. Its work is rooted in values of solidarity, equity and social justice. With a strong value on interdisciplinary perspectives, the Department is dedicated to addressing health issues of communities of the East Bay and California, and is particularly committed to the elimination of health disparities and to creating communities that are resilient in the face of climate change.

DUTIES OF THE POSITION: This tenure-track position requires specialized training and/or experience in the fields of bioethics or health humanities. We have a strong preference for candidates whose research in bioethics and/or health humanities focuses on climate change, and issues of human health and the environment. In particular, we seek candidates whose work explores the implications of environmental determinants and how it influences or complicates underlying values and assumptions in health-related fields. While the focus of this work can be clinical or rooted in population health, candidates should be knowledgeable in both areas. Candidates who explore the implications of these changes on marginalized communities and the implications for issues of health equity are particularly sought.
Candidates should demonstrate an ability to teach one or more core courses such as Bioethics, Health Humanities, or Health Law as well as teach and design elective courses. The successful candidate will also be expected to lead efforts in the Department in the development of additional courses and programs both within the Department and in collaboration with other departments that focus on the implications of human-driven changes to the environment and/or climate change on human health. In addition, the successful candidate should be familiar with and willing to teach courses using problem-based learning methodology. Applicants should note that teaching assignments at Cal State East Bay include courses at the Hayward, Concord and Online campuses. In addition to teaching, all faculty have advising responsibilities, assist the department with administrative and/or committee work, and are expected to assume campus-wide committee responsibilities.
RANK AND SALARY: Assistant Professor. Salary is dependent upon educational preparation and experience. Subject to budgetary authorization.
